![]() ![]() In short, Boetticher's volume did little to address the basic problem, but it drove the point home that until the contents of these sources are presented in a musicologically uncompromising and widely accessible fashion for both scholars and performers, the knowledge of this vast repertory of thousands of pieces will forever be limited to but a few people in the field. In addition, many mistakes were made in dating and in the designations of instruments, important caches of manuscripts were ignored (see Dinko Fabris's review in Fontes artis musicae 28 : 103-21 and my review in Journal of the American Musicological Society 35 : 201-3), and the volume did not even contain an index (though one was subsequently published, compiled by Christian Meyer "RISM B VII, suppl., s.d."). ![]() Reviewers were justified in their unrestrained criticism of a RISM catalogue in which neither titles nor incipits of the individual pieces in the manuscripts were given instead, Boetticher provided descriptions of the manuscripts' external appearance, unnecessarily long enumerations of blank and used folios, and highly arbitrary scribal analyses. ![]() Jahrhunderts ) can now be seen as a turning point in the field of lute music scholarship.
